New Music Projects

Durward Ensemble

Durward is a new music ensemble I created in the spring of 2015. We held our first performance at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 8, 2016. We commissioned four composers to write pieces for our first concert while highlighting the composer Irving Fine.

We have since raised $2000 for the American Cancer Society and recorded our first album fall 2018. For more information, please go to our webpage: Durward Ensemble

Here is a sound file of Eclipse by Laura Elise Schwedninger written for and premiered by Durward.

Two Low Duo

The Two Low Duo, formed by two Midwestern “back row malcontents,” is a trombone and tuba duo actively working to expand the repertoire for their two underprivileged instruments. We have commissioned new works, and are on the path to find pieces already written for the pair of instruments. We welcome anybody wanting to write for us. I am performing on trombone while Josh Calkin anchors it on the tuba, Dr. Calkin is the Instructor of Low Brass and Assistant Director of Bands at Wayne State. The picture of us is after we performed at the Midwest Trombone and Euphonium Conference (MTEC) at Eastern Illinois University in the fall of 2017.

Boykan Residency

The Boykan Residency took place in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 26-28, 2015 and featured the life and legacy of the composer Martin Boykan. During this celebration there were two trombone and piano premieres and one unaccompanied trombone piece by composers Nathaniel Eschler, Steven Roens, and Crystal Young-Otterstrom. I also had the opportunity to perform these works at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE and Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA during the spring semester of 2015.
